These are black & white images made over a seven year period between the late 1970’s and 1980’s. I use to live in Newburyport, Ma. and I had easy access to Plum Island which has a state wildlife refuge on the southern portion of this barrier island. Most of these images were taken in the refuge although a few were taken across the Parker River at Crane’s Beach in Ipswich, Ma. I’d go out in the winter afternoon’s for several hours at a time walking in the dunes, often covered in snow, making exposures with a 2/14 Rollie. As I look at these images, I’m struck by how they were the precursor for much of my later landscape work, especially in Death Valley and in Tibet.
